What is a heart attack and how to recognize i

Heart attack is a serious problem that affects the heart when not enough blood reaches it. The heart is like an engine: it needs fuel and oxygen to function. If the arteries that feed it close or narrow, the blood no longer flows and a part of the heart suffers or can die.

Types of heart attack

Not all heart attacks are the same:

  • Complete heart attack (STEMI): an artery is completely closed. Immediate intervention is needed.

  • Partial heart attack (NSTEMI): the artery is not completely closed but little blood arrives. It is still very dangerous.

  • Unstable angina: it is not a real heart attack, but it is a warning sign: chest pain that comes and goes, often during exertion or stress.

The most common symptoms

Everyone can feel them differently, but the most frequent signs are:

  • strong chest pain (as if we had a heavy weight on top);

  • pain that spreads to the left arm, back, jaw, or stomach;

  • shortness of breath, cold sweat, nausea, or fainting;

  • great weakness or sudden anxiety.

Never underestimate the signals

I've seen friends' parents who didn't recognize the symptoms, or perhaps they did recognize them but thought: "it can't happen to me, I'm fine, I exercise, I'm young".
And yet, a heart attack can strike anyone, even at 30 years old.
They didn't go to the emergency room, they continued with their lives... and the heart stopped.

It would have been enough to call an ambulance or go to the hospital: they would still be alive today, their relatives would not be mourning them.

For this reason, it is essential: if the symptoms are present, don't be ashamed, don't be afraid. Emergency rooms exist for this, they are paid for by everyone's taxes and are there to save our lives.

What to do immediately

If you think you or someone close is having a heart attack:

  1. Call 118 immediately.

  2. Do not drive yourself to the hospital.

  3. Stay still, calm, and wait for help.

Why it is important to recognize it

Every minute is precious: the earlier the intervention, the more heart is saved. Waiting thinking "it will pass on its own" can make the difference between going home and risking your life.
