Residence

Residence in Italy: my return

Living permanently abroad requires, as provided by Italian law, registration with AIRE (Registry of Italians Residing Abroad) and the loss of residence in Italy. During that time you remain an Italian citizen but are considered as a foreigner.

When living permanently in Italy, you must request registry registration as an Italian resident. From that moment, the rights and duties linked to residence resume: tax obligations, access to the National Health Service, school enrollment for children, etc.

In this section I describe the steps, systems, and issues I encountered, in order to provide a useful tool for those facing the same path, foreigners included.
